Learning Gardens Laboratory
Cultivating a sustainable future through garden-based education.
The Learning Gardens Lab (LGL) nurtures Oregon’s future leaders through academic enrichment, engagement with local sustainable food systems, and experiential garden-based education for Portland public school students, university students, and the community. All programs at LGL are coordinated by graduate student staff in PSU's Leadership for Sustainability Education program.
LGL is part of a 12-acre garden education site located in the heart of the diverse, working-class Brentwood-Darlington neighborhood. Established in 2005, our vibrant model farm provides education in sustainable gardening, healthy nutrition, civic engagement, and permaculture to more than a dozen community partners.
The land centers all that we do: hands-on and place-based work support academic achievement, leadership development, and participation in sustainable local food systems. We host Lane Middle School students, PSU students, SUN Program participants, Community Transition School students, OSU Extension Service’s beginning farmers, Master Gardeners, and more.
LGL exists as a unique partnership between Portland State University, Portland Public Schools, Portland Parks and Recreation, and Oregon State University Extension Service.
