Characterisation and Creative Freedom

Welcome to a special event at Playhouse East:

**Michael Chekhov Workshop: Characterisation and Creative Freedom**

Step beyond technique—unlock your imagination, playfulness, and expressive power with Michael Chekhov’s transformative approach. Join us in London Friday 1st and Saturday 2nd August for a dynamic, hands-on workshop open to actors, writers, directors, artists, teachers, mind and body practitioners, and creative explorers of all levels.

Whether you’re an established professional or just beginning, you’ll dive into psychological gesture, imaginary centres, the Four Brothers of Art and the Three Sisters, focal points, and improvisation. Bring a monologue, story, or personal project to apply these discoveries, making every exercise personal, immediate, and deeply creative.

This workshop honours every participant’s journey, meeting you right where you are—inviting challenge, play, and breakthrough for all. If you’re called to deepen your artistry, discover new tools, or reignite creative joy, this space is for you.

🎭 Actors: Please bring a monologue that you have not worked on before to allow yourself the opportunity to experience the tools in an open way without agenda.

✨ Directors, Writers, Artists, Storytellers, Musicians, Healers: You are welcome to bring a monologue or a story, or a personal project you can use to apply the tools to throughout the workshop.

🐝 Monologues/pieces to be no less than 1 minute, and no more than 3.

🎾 I invite you all to learn the text the Michael Chekhov way, which is the last line first, say it 3 times, then the second last line, say it 3 times, then the last two lines together, say them 3 times, working your way back to the start that way, each time adding the previous line saying it 3 times, then all the way to the end, saying them 3 times. This way as you go through the piece towards the end, you will be going into your most confident as opposed to the bit you've done the least! Of course, any actor knows, do not get locked into one way of saying the lines. You will have your own ways, I like to throw a tennis ball or juggle and only speak when the ball(s) are in the air.
