About this event

Watch the event.

The digital event on 15 October will explore the topic of "Reflections on life in science". Kaelin will share personal insights into his life as a scientist and his unlikely journey towards the Nobel Prize. He will also speak more generally about the challenges and opportunities of working in science, offering his thoughts and advice for scientists at all stages of their careers. The conversation will be free-flowing, and you will have the chance to submit questions.

William Kaelin received the 2019 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for his discoveries of how cells sense and adapt to oxygen availability. The importance of oxygen has been understood for centuries, but how cells adapt to changes in oxygen levels of remained a mystery. This changed in the 1990s when William Kaelin, Peter Ratcliffe, and Gregg Semenza identified a molecular machinery that regulates the activity of genes in response to varying levels of oxygen. The discoveries may lead to new treatments of anaemia, cancer and many other diseases.

This online event is part of the Nobel Prize Inspiration Initiative (NPII), a global programme designed to help Nobel Laureates share their inspirational stories and insights. It is held in partnership with AstraZeneca. It is free and open to all, and we particularly encourage science students and early-career researchers in Spain to attend. The event is held in association with the Barcelona Institute for Global Health.
