On the 19th of May, between 09:00 and 11:00, we will host a Knowledge Gathering together with Drew Engelson & Martin Mazur and moderated by Sofia Larsson.

We are pleased to invite you to the second 13|37 Knowledge Gathering of 2022! The external guest will be Drew Engelson. He is joined by our CTO, Martin Mazur. Accompanying both of them will be Sofia Larsson as the moderator for the session,

Drew Engelson is the director of engineering at Starbucks. In his role, Drew serves engineering teams that develop and operate the Starbucks Rewards and Starbucks Mobile Order and Pay platforms.

Drew is a believer in wielding our technical prowess responsibly; optimising our digital carbon footprint to achieve planet-positivity.

With a background in software engineering, architecture, cloud, and DevOps, Drew has levelled-up leading brands such as National Geographic, PBS, Marvel, Gannett/USA TODAY, Zipcar, and The White House.

What will this session cover?

During this Knowledge Gathering Drew will talk to us about what makes a Sustainable Technologist.

The cloud (data centers) today account for 3-5% of global carbon emissions, roughly the same as the aviation industry, and businesses are expecting tremendous digital growth over the next few years. Every technologist has an opportunity to participate in turning the tide on climate change by being carbon-aware and deliberately considering carbon in everyday decisions.

Apart from this, Drew will also go over some carbon-reduction wins by the Starbucks Commerce and Loyalty Platform team.
